Course: L3 Team Leader / Supervisor

I am so glad I undertook the apprenticeship as it has taught me a huge amount; the content was great and very relevant to my role. It has been a joy to be tutored by Paula, she was such a positive force and knew when and how to apply the right kind of pressure to ensure I got the most out of the apprenticeship (any myself!), while being beyond understanding with extenuating circumstances I faced. She offered complete support, and without a doubt contributed to my success.

National Apprenticeship Week 2024

National apprenticeship week is always an exciting time for apprentices, their coaches and apprentice organisations everywhere. It is an opportunity to show off, to share the amazing success of our wonderful learners, to highlight the amazing support they receive from our fantastic team of coaches and of course to try and attract new learners to the great programmes that we, and other apprenticeship training providers.

For AC Training NAW 24 is particularly exciting. It coincides with a big change for us. AC Training has been around for 14 years, but today marks our transition from our previous name – Always Consult, to AC Training. 14 years is a long time, and we felt it was time for a refresh. Over those 14 years we’ve developed a great reputation for training particularly in the leadership management coaching and careers sectors. However, whist a name changes, we will still offer the same great service, creative approach and innovative training that has been the hallmark of our success.

Our apprenticeships focus in two areas, leadership and management for clinicians and other healthcare professionals working in the NHS and private healthcare and careers friendships for careers advisors working in schools, universities and beyond. Over 1000 apprentices have signed up to work with us and we love delivering programmes as creatively and innovatively as possible, ensuring they are relevant to the learner taking part and the organisation they work within.

So, keep an eye out on our social media pages for all of the news and events from NAW24. We have got a new batch of learners starting their journey with us on Wednesday 7th Feb, we are out and about in London at Whittington NHS Trust and St Thomas’ Hospital on 7th & 9th Feb and we will be sharing the stories of success of many of our learners over the course of the week.

If you want to find out more about our apprenticeships, as well as our non-apprenticeship training courses, Have a look at our shiny new website – ac.training.

Operations Manager – Level 5

Who is this for:

This programme is intended for those who are a bit more mature.  They have will have been in the workplace for a few years and whilst they may not have had a formal leadership appointment, they will have led and managed teams over the course of their work life.  They may have just taken up a more senior position, or taken on greater responsibility.  They may have some  formal training in Leadership and Management (L&M), but this will be quite limited. All of our L&M programmes are clinically focused and intended for clinicians and managers working in a clinical setting.  This programme is particularly suited to newly qualified medical & AHP consultants or other clinicians working in management roles at Band 8a or b.

Why this programme:

The programme aims to develop the soft skills that are not necessarily taught and developed through clinical training pathways.  The programme is practically focused and designed for those in a leadership and leadership and management who lack formal training. Learners will focus on developing L&M skills in the workplace and developing the foundations of L&M to support their future progression.  Critically it focuses on the multi-disciplinary teams and and recognises that learners taking part will often lead these, based on their technical training and need support with the soft skills required to do this well.  The programme addresses the well-researched correlation between clinical leadership and patient outcome.

Using the apprenticeship system allows you to draw down the funding from your apprenticeship levy (see link here for details) and offers protracted training over 18 Months, that seeks to not only cement knowledge and then engrain skills and behaviours.

Why us:

AC Training has been in existence since 2009.  In the past 8 years we have worked extensively with over 20 NHS Trusts and other healthcare organisations around the UK to support the development of clinical leadership and management.  We have delivered this particular programmes for the past 6 years to a variety of audiences.

How is the programme delivered:

ODM is delivered in three principal ways:

  1. Workshop Teaching: Over the course of the 18 Months , there will be 11 workshops focused on leadership in clinical practice. These are clinically orientated and will be interactive. Learners’ attendance at these will support your progress through the course. 2 of the workshops will be day long, face to face sessions, with the remainder taking place online over half a day.
  2. Individual Training: Each learner will be allocated an individual leadership coach. They are responsible for guiding them through the programme, delivering 1-2-1 training, observing them in the workplace and giving objective feedback. They have significant experience in the delivery of leadership and management and can help relate the theory to the clinical reality.
  3. Resources and Activities: Learners will have access to a series of online resources and related activities. The resources are there to offer them an opportunity to read into the theory. The associated activities have been written, in order to place the theory into a clinical context. The activities can be completed individually or with their coach as a focus for a learning discussion.

What is covered in the programme:

The following topics form the core of the content:

  • Leading & Managing People
  • Team building
  • Self Awareness & Management
  • Building Relationships
  • Communication
  • Operational Management
  • Project Management
  • Finance
  • Decision making

What is the commitment:

The principal commitment from you, employer, is time. Time for your learners to undertake the workshops and coaching sessions and also time for them to get into the material and do the work required to successfully complete the course.  We also ask line managers to take an active interest in their learner’s progression and attend quarterly review meetings with the learner and their skills coach to enable them to feed into the apprentices progress.

The workshop teaching is deliberately kept to a manageable level but learners do need to attend these. In addition to the workshop training, learners and their leadership coach will meet either individually or in a small group (no more than 3 or 4) once a month. These meetings will typically take place remotely via Zoom/Teams and last approximately 2 hours. Finally, they need the learner to do a bit of reading into the resources and complete the activities linked to this. This can be done whenever they have the time and they should factor in about 2 hours per week for this.

All of this work contributes to their ‘Off the Job’ Training quota. If you click here then you can find out all about this: ‘Off the Job Training quota’.  If you are interested in signing up one or more of your team onto this programme, we will ask you to committing to supporting them with the necessary time to complete the programme.

What does it cost:

The programme is funded through the government apprenticeship system and all large employers pay into this already.  The price for the programme is £9,000 and all of this is taken from your apprenticeship levy there are no other charges. If your organisation does not pay into the apprenticeship levy, e.g. a GP surgery, you can still put your team on the programme programme but your organisation would need to contribute £450 to the cost of the training.

There are a couple of things to be aware of:

Eligibility:  The programme utilises government funding through the apprenticeship system and comes with some eligibility criteria.

The following are eligible:

British or EU Citizens
Anyone who has a valid work permit for the UK and has been resident in the UK for 3 years or more
Must have a contract covering the duration of the programme.

Functional Skills

As of 11th February 2025, Functional Skills qualifications (or equivalent English and Maths at Level 2) are no longer a mandatory requirement for completing an apprenticeship, for those that are over 18 years old at the start point of the training.
Some employers continue to see value in supporting their staff to develop strong English and Maths skills if they do not already have these. Should you wish to offer functional skills then we are happy to deliver Functional Skills training and assessments alongside the apprenticeship where appropriate, and we’ll work with you to identify which learners might benefit from this additional support. Equally, should a particular learner wish to develop their English and/or Maths, we are happy to support this as required.
